(i) The Etard reaction is a method for the selective oxidation of the methyl (-CH3) side chain of toluene to an aldehyde (-CHO) group, stopping at the aldehyde stage (unlike KMnO4, which would over-oxidise it to the carboxylic acid). Toluene is treated with chromyl chloride (CrO2Cl2) in dry carbon disulphide (CS2) to form an addition complex, which is then hydrolysed (acidified) to give benzaldehyde.
C6H5CH3 (toluene, A) --CrO2Cl2/CS2, then hydrolysis--> C6H5CHO (benzaldehyde)
So A = toluene, and the reaction/name is the Etard reaction.
