Only acetaldehyde has a CH3-CO- group, so only it gives the yellow iodoform precipitate; formaldehyde does not.

Iodoform test: The reagent is I2 with NaOH (sodium hypoiodite). Compounds containing a CH3-CO- group (or a CH3-CH(OH)- group oxidisable to it) give yellow crystalline iodoform, CHI3.
