Only primary amines form isocyanides with chloroform and alcoholic KOH (the carbylamine reaction); secondary amines do not react this way.

Carbylamine (isocyanide) test: A primary amine, on heating with chloroform (CHCl3) and alcoholic potassium hydroxide, forms an isocyanide (carbylamine) which has an extremely unpleasant, offensive odour:

R-NH2 + CHCl3 + 3KOH --Δ--> R-NC (offensive smell) + 3KCl + 3H2O

A secondary amine (R2NH) has no free -NH2 group needed for this mechanism (dichlorocarbene insertion requires a primary amine's -NH2), so it does NOT form an isocyanide and gives NO reaction (no foul smell) under the same conditions.
