Analgesics relieve pain, antibiotics act against disease-causing microorganisms, and antihistamines counter the body's histamine-driven allergic response — each acting on a distinct therapeutic target.

(i) Analgesics

Analgesics are drugs that relieve pain without causing loss of consciousness, without disturbing the nervous system, and without any other significant abnormal effects. They are of two main types:

  • Narcotic analgesics (e.g. morphine, codeine — derived from opium): act on the central nervous system, relieve even severe pain, but are habit-forming/addictive and can depress respiration in high doses.
  • Non-narcotic analgesics (e.g. aspirin, paracetamol): relieve mild to moderate pain, are not addictive, and many (like aspirin) additionally show antipyretic (fever-reducing) and anti-inflammatory action.

(ii) Antibiotics

Antibiotics are chemical substances, produced wholly or partly by microorganisms (or made synthetically), which in low concentrations either inhibit the growth of (bacteriostatic) or destroy (bactericidal) disease-causing microorganisms/pathogenic bacteria, without seriously harming the host. They are used to treat bacterial infections in the body. Examples: penicillin, ampicillin, chloramphenicol (a broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria).

(iii) Antihistamines
