Vapour pressure by itself is not a colligative property; solving π = (w/M)(RT/V) for the protein gives M ≈ 1890 g/mol; and the van't Hoff factor corrects colligative-property equations for dissociating/associating solutes.

a) Which is not a colligative property

Colligative properties depend only on the number of solute particles, not their nature. Osmotic pressure, elevation of boiling point and depression of freezing point are all colligative (they arise from the relative lowering of vapour pressure caused by the solute). Vapour pressure of the solution/solvent by itself, however, is a characteristic physical property, not a colligative one — it is the change (lowering) in vapour pressure on adding solute that is colligative.

Answer: (iii) Vapour pressure

b) (i) Molar mass of the protein

Given: w = 1.26 g, V = 200 cm³ = 0.2 L, π = 8.3 × 10⁻² bar, T = 300 K, R = 0.083 L bar K⁻¹ mol⁻¹

Using π = (w R T)/(M V):

M = (w R T)/(π V) = (1.26 × 0.083 × 300)/(8.3 × 10⁻² × 0.2)

M = 31.374/0.0166

M ≈ 1890 g mol⁻¹

b) (ii) Significance of the van't Hoff factor
