Homogeneous catalysis has catalyst and reactants in one phase (e.g. solution-phase catalysis); heterogeneous catalysis has them in different phases (e.g. the Fe-catalysed Haber process); and among the given options, gum is the emulsifying agent.

(i)(a) Homogeneous catalysis

In homogeneous catalysis, the catalyst and the reactants are present in the same phase (all gases, or all in one liquid solution). For example, the oxidation of SO2 to SO3 using NO(g) as catalyst — all species are gaseous.

(i)(b) Example of heterogeneous catalysis

In heterogeneous catalysis, the catalyst is in a different phase from the reactants — most commonly a solid catalyst acting on gaseous or liquid reactants.

Example: the Haber process for ammonia synthesis, N2(g) + 3H2(g) --Fe(s), catalyst--> 2NH3(g), where finely divided iron (solid) catalyses a gas-phase reaction. (Other valid examples: hydrogenation of vegetable oils using finely divided Ni; oxidation of SO2 to SO3 using V2O5 in the Contact process.)

(ii) Emulsifying agent …
