- Hardy-Schulze rule The coagulating (flocculating) power of an electrolyte ion — the ion carrying a charge OPPOSITE to that of the colloidal particles — increases with the magnitude of its charge (valency). The greater the valency of the flocculating ion, the more effective (and the smaller the concentration needed) it is at causing coagulation. Example: As2S3 sol is negatively charged. To coagulate it, the effectiveness of cations follows: Al³⁺ > Ba²⁺ > Na⁺ (a trivalent cation coagulates it at a much lower concentration than a divalent or monovalent cation).
