(i) PCl3 fumes in moist air: PCl3 is very susceptible to hydrolysis by atmospheric moisture:
PCl3 + 3H2O → H3PO3 + 3HCl
The HCl gas produced escapes and reacts with moisture in the air to form visible white fumes (fine droplets of dilute hydrochloric acid mist). This is why PCl3 appears to "fume" when exposed to moist air.
