NaCl crystallises in the fcc (rock-salt) structure with Z = 4 formula units per unit cell; using ρ = ZM/(N_A a³) with a = 564 pm gives a density of 2.165 g cm⁻³.

a) Number of NaCl units (Z) in the unit cell

In the rock-salt structure, Cl⁻ ions occupy the fcc lattice points and Na⁺ ions occupy all the octahedral voids.

Contribution of Cl⁻ ions:

  • 8 corner ions × 1/8 = 1
  • 6 face-centre ions × 1/2 = 3
  • Total Cl⁻ = 1 + 3 = 4

Contribution of Na⁺ ions (in octahedral voids):

  • 12 edge-centre ions × 1/4 = 3
  • 1 body-centre ion × 1 = 1
  • Total Na⁺ = 3 + 1 = 4

Since Na⁺ : Cl⁻ = 4 : 4, the number of NaCl formula units per unit cell, Z = 4.

b) Density of NaCl

Density is given by:

ρ = (Z × M) / (N_A × a³)
