In a cubic close packed (ccp/fcc) structure every atom touches 12 neighbours, and each mole of atoms generates N_A octahedral voids and 2N_A tetrahedral voids, i.e. 3N_A voids per mole in total.

  1. Coordination number: In cubic close packing (which is the same as face-centred cubic packing), each sphere is in contact with 12 other spheres — 6 in its own layer, 3 in the layer above, and 3 in the layer below. So the coordination number is 12.
  2. Number of voids in N mol: In any close-packed structure (hcp or ccp), for every 'n' close-packed spheres:
  • Number of octahedral voids = n
  • Number of tetrahedral voids = 2n

For 1 mole of atoms (n = N_A, Avogadro number):

  • Octahedral voids = N_A …
