Schottky defect is a pair of vacancies; Frenkel defect is a displaced ion at an interstitial site; an F-centre is an electron trapped in an anion vacancy. AgBr uniquely shows both Schottky and Frenkel defects.

(i) A. Schottky defect: This is a point defect that arises when an equal number of cations and anions are missing from their normal lattice sites, creating a pair of vacancies (to maintain electrical neutrality). It is common in ionic solids where the cation and anion are of similar size and have high coordination numbers, e.g. NaCl, KCl, CsCl. It decreases the density of the crystal.

B. Frenkel defect: This arises when a smaller ion (usually the cation) leaves its normal lattice site and occupies an interstitial site, creating a vacancy at its original position and an interstitial ion elsewhere. It occurs in ionic solids with a large difference between the sizes of cation and anion and low coordination number, e.g. ZnS, AgCl, AgI. The density of the crystal remains unchanged since no ions are actually lost from the crystal, they are just displaced.
