Modulation index is the ratio of the message signal's peak amplitude to the carrier's peak amplitude: μ = Am/Ac = 0.5.

In amplitude modulation, the modulation index (depth of modulation) is defined as

μ=AmAc\mu = \frac{A_m}{A_c}

where AmA_m is the peak (amplitude) voltage of the message (modulating) signal and AcA_c is the peak voltage of the carrier signal. The frequencies of the two signals (10 kHz and 1 MHz) don't enter this calculation — only the peak voltages matter.

Given Am=10A_m = 10 V and Ac=20A_c = 20 V:

μ=1020=0.5\mu = \frac{10}{20} = 0.5
