Maxwell introduced displacement current, Id=ε0 dΦE/dtI_d = \varepsilon_0\,d\Phi_E/dt, to fix a flaw in Ampere's circuital law wherever the conduction current is not continuous, such as in the gap of a charging capacitor.

(a) Displacement current: Ampere's original law, ∮B⃗⋅dl⃗=μ0Ic\oint\vec{B}\cdot d\vec{l} = \mu_0 I_c, gives inconsistent results for a charging capacitor depending on which surface (bounded by the same loop) is chosen — one surface cutting through a wire carries conduction current, another passing between the plates carries none. Maxwell resolved this by proposing that a time-varying electric field between the plates is itself equivalent to a current, called the displacement current:
