Magnetisation is the net magnetic dipole moment per unit volume of a material; it has dimensions equal to (magnetic moment)/(volume) = [A L−1][A\,L^{-1}].

Definition: When a magnetic material is placed in an external magnetic field, the atomic magnetic dipoles inside it get aligned (partly or wholly) and the material acquires a net magnetic moment. The magnetisation M⃗\vec{M} of the material is defined as the net magnetic moment per unit volume:

M⃗=m⃗netV\vec{M} = \dfrac{\vec{m}_{net}}{V}

where m⃗net\vec{m}_{net} is the vector sum of the magnetic dipole moments of all the atoms in a small volume V of the material.
