In situ conservation happens 'on site', within the organism's natural ecosystem, while ex situ conservation happens 'off site', by removing the organism (or its germplasm) to an artificial, managed setting.

In situ (on-site) conservation:

  • The species is conserved within its own natural habitat/ecosystem, along with all the other species that naturally occur there.
  • It protects the whole community of organisms and their interactions, not just one target species.
  • Legally protected areas set up for this purpose include National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries, and Biosphere Reserves.
  • Example: protecting the Asiatic lion within Gir National Park, Gujarat -- the lion is conserved in the exact forest ecosystem it naturally lives in.

Ex situ (off-site) conservation:

  • The threatened species (or its reproductive material -- seeds, gametes, tissues) is removed from its natural habitat and conserved in a separate, artificially maintained location.
  • Useful for species that are critically endangered or need controlled breeding conditions. …
