The milk produced during the first few days of lactation, called colostrum, contains a high concentration of maternal antibodies that give the newborn baby vital passive immunity — this is why breast feeding during the initial period is so important for the baby's disease resistance.

During the first few days after childbirth, the mammary glands secrete a thick, yellowish fluid called colostrum. Unlike mature milk, colostrum is exceptionally rich in antibodies (chiefly immunoglobulin A, IgA) produced by the mother's own immune system.
