Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)/RTIs such as gonorrhoea, syphilis, genital herpes and HIV/AIDS spread mainly through sexual contact with an infected person, and can largely be prevented through safe-sex practices and prompt medical treatment.

a) Two examples of STDs:

  • Gonorrhoea — a bacterial STD caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
  • Syphilis — a bacterial STD caused by Treponema pallidum. (Other examples include genital herpes, chlamydiasis, genital warts, trichomoniasis, hepatitis-B, and HIV leading to AIDS.)

b) Two methods to prevent STDs:

  1. Avoid sexual intercourse with unknown/multiple partners or with an infected person: Since these diseases spread mainly through sexual contact, avoiding casual and unprotected sex with multiple or unknown partners greatly reduces the risk of infection. Practising monogamy (having a single faithful partner) is one of the most effective preventive measures.
  2. Always use a condom during coitus: Condoms act as a barrier that prevents direct contact of body fluids and genital skin/mucosa, greatly reducing the chance of transmission of the causative pathogens (bacteria, viruses, protozoans). …
