IUDs are devices placed inside the uterus for contraception; some release copper ions, others release a contraceptive hormone.

IUDs (Intra-Uterine Devices) are contraceptive devices that are inserted by medical professionals into the uterus through the vagina. They are one of the widely used, reversible methods of birth control, increase phagocytosis of sperm within the uterus and, in the case of hormone-releasing devices, also alter the uterine environment/cervical mucus to be unsuitable for implantation/fertilisation.

IUDs are of three types:
