Understanding employment patterns and labour market characteristics is fundamental to grasping how India's economy functions at the ground level. Each of these terms captures a distinct reality of working life in our country, and getting the definitions right matters because policy decisions flow from how we classify and measure these phenomena.

Seasonal Unemployment describes a situation where work is available only during certain times of the year. Think of agricultural labourers in rural India who find employment during sowing and harvesting seasons but remain idle during the intervening months. Construction workers in regions with harsh winters face similar patterns. The unemployment is not permanent, but it recurs predictably with the calendar. This matches definition (c) – Unemployment occurring in specific season.

Self-employed workers form the backbone of India's informal economy. These are individuals who do not work for wages or salaries but instead use their own capital, skills, and resources to generate income. • Casual wage workers: These workers are typically hired on a daily or short-term basis. They do not have a regular employer, nor do they receive social security benefits like provident fund, gratuity, or paid leave. Their employment is often temporary and depends on the availability of work. They are paid wages for the days they work, and their income can be irregular and uncertain. This category often includes daily wage labourers in construction, agriculture, or small-scale industries.

• Regular salaried employees: These individuals work for an employer and receive a fixed monthly salary. Their employment is generally more stable, and they often enjoy social security benefits, such as provident fund, gratuity, pension, and medical leave, as per labour laws and company policies. They have a formal employer-employee relationship, and their terms of employment are usually governed by contracts or service rules. This category includes government employees, corporate sector employees, and teachers in established institutions.
