Causes: greenhouse gases from fossil fuels, deforestation, industry. Consequences: melting glaciers, rising seas, climate change, harm to agriculture/health.

Global warming is the gradual rise in the earth's average temperature.

Causes:

  1. Build-up of greenhouse gases – the accumulation of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and CFCs in the atmosphere, which trap heat (the greenhouse effect).
  2. Burning of fossil fuels – coal, oil and gas burnt in industry, transport and power generation release large amounts of CO₂.
  3. Deforestation – cutting of forests reduces the absorption of CO₂.
  4. Industrialisation and vehicular emissions.

Consequences:

  1. Rising temperatures and melting of glaciers and polar ice caps.
