Privatisation in India: disinvestment of PSUs, dereservation of industries, autonomy to PSUs and private entry into reserved areas.

Privatisation means reducing the role of the public sector and increasing that of the private sector, by transferring ownership and/or management of public enterprises to private hands. The main measures of privatisation in India (after 1991) were:

  1. Disinvestment – the government sold a part of its shareholding in public-sector undertakings (PSUs) to the private sector and the public, raising resources and bringing in private efficiency.
  2. Dereservation of industries – the number of industries reserved exclusively for the public sector was drastically reduced (from 17 to a few), opening them to the private sector.
  3. Greater autonomy to PSUs – efficient PSUs were given more operational and financial autonomy by granting them Navratna, Maharatna and Miniratna status. …
