Exclusive: classes like 0–10, 10–20 (upper limit excluded, goes to next class); Inclusive: classes like 0–9, 10–19 (both limits included).

The exclusive and inclusive methods are two ways of forming class intervals:

Exclusive method:

  • The upper limit of one class is the same as the lower limit of the next class (e.g., 0–10, 10–20, 20–30).
  • An item exactly equal to the upper limit is excluded from that class and included in the next (e.g., 10 goes into 10–20, not 0–10).
  • It is suitable for continuous data and is the more common method.

Inclusive method:

  • Both the lower and upper limits are included in the same class, and the classes do not overlap (e.g., 0–9, 10–19, 20–29).
  • There is a gap between the upper limit of one class and the lower limit of the next, which is removed by finding class boundaries when needed. …
