Lorenz curve: a graph showing inequality; the farther from the diagonal line of equality, the greater the dispersion.

The Lorenz curve is a graphic method of studying dispersion, devised by Dr. Max O. Lorenz. It is used to show the degree of inequality (concentration) in the distribution of a variable such as income or wealth.

How it is drawn (and read):

  • The cumulative percentages of the variable (e.g., income) are taken on one axis and the cumulative percentages of the items/population on the other.
  • The straight diagonal line (joining the two corners) is the line of equal distribution (line of equality) — it shows a situation of perfect equality (e.g., 20% of people earning 20% of income).
  • The actual data are plotted as a curve. The greater the distance of the Lorenz curve from the line of equality, the greater the inequality (dispersion); a curve coinciding with the diagonal means perfect equality. …
