Secondary growth in dicots results from the activity of the vascular cambium (produces secondary xylem and phloem) and the cork cambium (produces periderm).

Unlike monocots, dicotyledonous stems and roots possess lateral meristems in addition to the apical meristem. The vascular cambium, present between the primary xylem and primary phloem (and also forming in the medullary ray regions), becomes a continuous ring and cuts off secondary xylem toward the inside and secondary phloem toward the outside, increasing the girth of the axis.
