Apoenzyme is the inactive protein component of an enzyme; holoenzyme is the fully assembled, catalytically active enzyme (apoenzyme plus its cofactor).

Many enzymes are conjugated proteins, consisting of a protein part and a non-protein part:

  1. Apoenzyme: This is the protein component of the enzyme by itself. It is not catalytically active on its own and cannot carry out the enzyme's reaction until it associates with its required non-protein partner.

  2. Cofactor: The non-protein component required by the apoenzyme; it may be an inorganic metal ion (e.g. Zn2+, Mg2+), an organic coenzyme (e.g. NAD+, FAD, often derived from vitamins), or a tightly bound prosthetic group.
