Chromatography separates mixture components by their differing movement through a stationary medium driven by a solvent, and is widely used to separate pigments and other biomolecules.

Chromatography works on the principle that different substances in a mixture have different affinities for a stationary phase (such as a strip of chromatography/filter paper, or a column packed with an adsorbent) versus a moving solvent (the mobile phase). As the solvent moves (by capillary action or under pressure) through the stationary phase carrying the mixture along with it, components that bind more weakly to the stationary phase travel further/faster, while those binding more strongly lag behind — separating the mixture into distinct spots or bands.
