Lysosomes hold a battery of hydrolytic enzymes capable of breaking down macromolecules; uncontrolled release of these enzymes inside the cell causes self-digestion of the cell, so lysosomes are nicknamed 'suicidal bags'.

Lysosomes are small, single membrane-bound vesicles formed by the Golgi apparatus. They are also called the digestive system of the cell because they contain almost all types of hydrolytic enzymes (hydrolases — lipases, proteases, carbohydrases, nucleases, etc.) that are optimally active at the acidic pH maintained inside the lysosome. Normally, these enzymes are safely contained within the lysosomal membrane and used to digest foreign material taken in by the cell (e.g. bacteria via phagocytosis) or to break down and recycle the cell's own worn-out organelles (autophagy).
