Four important factors that affect the rate of photosynthesis:
- Light intensity - as light intensity increases from darkness, the rate of photosynthesis rises proportionally at first, then levels off at higher intensities once other factors (like CO2 or enzyme capacity) become limiting; very high light intensity can even damage the photosynthetic apparatus.
- Carbon dioxide concentration - CO2 is the raw material fixed in the Calvin cycle; increasing CO2 concentration (within the normal atmospheric range and somewhat beyond) increases the rate of photosynthesis, until other factors become limiting.
- Temperature - since the dark reactions of photosynthesis (the Calvin cycle) are enzyme-catalysed, the rate rises with temperature up to an optimum (usually around 25-35 C for most plants) and then falls as enzymes begin to denature at higher temperatures. …
