Red algae are characterised by the pigment phycoerythrin and floridean starch as stored food.

Red algae (Class Rhodophyceae) are mostly marine, found largely in warmer coastal waters, and range from small forms to complex, multicellular seaweeds. Two of their main characteristics are:

  1. Pigmentation — besides chlorophyll a and d, they contain the accessory pigment r-phycoerythrin (a red pigment) in greater proportion, which masks the green of chlorophyll and gives most members their characteristic red colour.

  2. Stored food — the reserve food material is a special form of starch called floridean starch, which is structurally similar to amylopectin/glycogen and is stored outside the chloroplast in the cytoplasm.
