Q.Write the answer in one sentence: What is classification?

Phylogenetic classification is based on the evolutionary (phylogenetic) relationships between organisms, i.e., their common ancestry.

Early classification systems grouped organisms by convenient but superficial criteria such as habit (e.g., herbs vs trees), habitat, or utility to humans (e.g., 'useful' vs 'useless' plants). These artificial systems do not reflect true biological relationships.

Classification is the systematic grouping of organisms based on shared and differing characteristics.

Given the enormous diversity of living organisms on Earth, biologists sort them into an orderly, hierarchical system of categories (species, genus, family, order, class, phylum/division, kingdom) called taxa, based on shared characteristics, evolutionary relationships, and points of difference. This process of classification (studied under taxonomy) makes it possible …

Phylogeny means the evolutionary history of a species. Phylogenetic classification arranges organisms based on how closely they share a common evolutionary ancestor, using evidence from morphology, fossils, and (in modern systems) molecular data.

Early classification systems grouped plants/animals by artificial criteria — utility (e.g., edible vs. poisonous), habit (e.g., trees vs. herbs), or superficial similarity in form. These are convenient but not scientifically meaningful, since unrelated organisms can look alike (convergent evolution) and closely related organisms can look very different.

Systema Naturae was written by Carolus Linnaeus, the Swedish naturalist regarded as the father of modern taxonomy.

Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778) published Systema Naturae, in which he laid down the principles for classifying and naming living organisms. This work introduced the hierarchical system of taxonomic categories (kingdom, class, order, genus, species, etc.) and popularised binomial nomenclature — naming each species with a two-part Latin name (genus + species). This systematic approach became the foundation of the classification and naming conventions used in biology to this day.

The three-domain classification was proposed by Carl Woese (1990), grouping all life into Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya based on rRNA sequence comparisons — a scheme that cuts across Whittaker's five-kingdom system.

Carl Woese, studying the sequences of small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) across organisms, found that prokaryotes are not a single natural group. He split them into two fundamentally distinct domains — Bacteria (true bacteria) and Archaea (ancient, often extremophile prokaryotes with distinct membrane lipids and cell wall chemistry) — while all eukaryotes were placed in a third domain, Eukarya. This three-domain system sit …
