VSEPR theory predicts the geometry of a molecule based on minimizing repulsion between the valence-shell electron pairs surrounding the central atom.

Any four main postulates of the Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion (VSEPR) theory:

  1. The shape/geometry of a covalent molecule is determined by the total number of electron pairs (both bonding pairs and lone pairs) present in the valence shell of the central atom.
  2. Electron pairs (whether bonding or lone) repel one another and therefore arrange themselves around the central atom in a way that keeps them as far apart as possible, minimizing repulsion and maximizing stability.
  3. The order of repulsive interaction strength is: lone pair-lone pair (lp-lp) > lone pair-bond pair (lp-bp) > bond pair-bond pair (bp-bp), because a lone pair is held closer to the nucleus and occupies more space than a bonding pair. …
