Question of 155

Q.The value of ΔG° for the phosphorylation of glucose in glycolysis is 13.8 kJmol^-1. Find the value of Kc at 298 K. OR Hydrolysis of sucrose gives Glucose and Fructose according to the following reaction:
Sucrose + H2O ⇌ Glucose + Fructose
Equilibrium constant (Kc) for the reaction is 2 x 10^13 at 300 K. Calculate ΔG° at 300 K.

With ΔG° = +13.8 kJ/mol at 298 K, using ΔG° = -RT ln K gives Kc ≈ 3.8 x 10^-3.

ΔG° = -RT ln K

Given:

ΔG° = 13.8 kJ/mol = 13800 J/mol (positive, since phosphorylation of glucose alone is energetically unfavourable and needs to be coupled to ATP hydrolysis in glycolysis)

R = 8.314 J K^-1 mol^-1

T = 298 K

ln K = -ΔG°/(RT) = -13800 / (8.314 x 298) = -13800 / 2477.57 = -5.571

K = e^-5.571 ≈ 3.81 x 10^-3
