Gammexane (also called BHC, benzene hexachloride) is made by the photochemical addition of chlorine gas to benzene under sunlight.

Benzene undergoes an addition reaction (not the usual substitution typical of aromatic compounds) when exposed to chlorine gas in the presence of ultraviolet/sunlight. Three molecules of chlorine add across the three double bonds of benzene, converting it to 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexachlorocyclohexane, commercially known as gammexane or BHC (benzene hexachloride), historically used as an insecticide.

Chemical equation:

C6H6 + 3Cl2 --(sunlight)--> C6H6Cl6

(benzene) + (chlorine) -> (gammexane / BHC)
