Markovnikov's rule: in addition of HX to an unsymmetrical alkene, hydrogen adds to the carbon with more hydrogens already, and the halogen adds to the carbon with fewer hydrogens.

When a protic acid HX (such as HCl, HBr, or HI) is added across an unsymmetrical double bond, two different products are theoretically possible. Markovnikov's rule (1869) states: 'In the addition of an unsymmetrical reagent (HX) to an unsymmetrical alkene, the negative part (X) of the reagent attaches itself to the carbon atom that has the lesser number of hydrogen atoms, while the positive part (H) attaches to the carbon atom bearing the greater number of hydrogen atoms.'

This occurs because the reaction proceeds through the more stable carbocation intermediate (typically the more substituted one), which then combines with the halide ion.
