Escape velocity is the minimum speed needed to escape a planet's gravity permanently; for earth, v_e = sqrt(2GM/R) ≈ 11.2 km/s.

When a body is thrown upward from the earth's surface with insufficient speed, gravity eventually pulls it back. Escape velocity is defined as the minimum initial velocity with which a body must be projected vertically from a planet's surface so that it overcomes the planet's gravitational attraction entirely and never returns (it just reaches infinite distance with zero final velocity).

It is derived by equating the initial kinetic energy to the work needed to move the body from the surface (radius R) to infinity against gravity:

(1/2)mv_e^2 = GMm/R

=> v_e = sqrt(2GM/R)
