A geo-stationary satellite has a 24-hour orbital period, moves in Earth's equatorial plane in the same direction as Earth's spin, and so appears fixed over one point on the ground.

For a satellite to appear stationary relative to an observer on Earth's surface, it must revolve around the Earth in exactly the same time the Earth takes to rotate once on its axis, and in the same direction. This gives it two defining characteristics:

  1. Time period: Its orbital period equals Earth's rotational period, approximately 24 hours (more precisely 23 h 56 min, one sidereal day).
  2. Orbit geometry: It revolves in the equatorial plane (0 degrees inclination), in the same direction as Earth's rotation (west to east), at a fixed altitude of about 36,000 km above the equator -- the height at which this orbital period is achieved. …
