Newton's second law states F is proportional to dp/dt; for constant mass this simplifies exactly to F = ma.

Newton's Second Law of Motion: The rate of change of linear momentum of a body is directly proportional to the net external force applied on it, and the change in momentum occurs in the direction of the applied force.

Mathematically: F is proportional to dp/dt, i.e., F = k (dp/dt), where k is a constant of proportionality that becomes 1 with a suitable choice of units (as in SI units), so F = dp/dt.

Proof that F = ma:

Momentum, p = m v, where m is mass and v is velocity.

dp/dt = d(mv)/dt.

For a body of constant mass m (m does not change with time):

dp/dt = m (dv/dt) = m a, since dv/dt = a (acceleration).
