Moment of inertia I = sigma(m_i * r_i^2) depends on how much mass a body has, how that mass is distributed relative to the rotation axis, the body's shape/size, and exactly where the axis is placed.

Moment of inertia measures a body's resistance to a change in its rotational motion, defined for a system of particles as:

I = sigma(m_i * r_i^2)

where r_i is the perpendicular distance of the i-th particle (of mass m_i) from the axis of rotation. From this definition, the factors it depends on are:

  1. Mass of the body: a heavier body (more total mass) generally has a larger moment of inertia, all else being equal.

  2. Distribution of mass relative to the axis: since I depends on r^2, mass located FARTHER from the axis contributes much more to I than the same mass located close to the axis. This is why a hollow cylinder has a larger I than a solid cylinder of the same mass and radius.
