For an isothermal process, W = nRT ln(V2/V1) = 2.303 nRT log10(V2/V1), obtained by integrating P dV using PV = nRT with T constant.

In an isothermal process, the temperature T of the gas remains constant throughout, so from the ideal gas equation PV = nRT, pressure P = nRT/V.

Work done by the gas when it expands from volume V1 to V2 is:

W = ∫(V1 to V2) P dV = ∫(V1 to V2) (nRT/V) dV

Since n, R, T are constant during an isothermal process, they come out of the integral:

W = nRT ∫(V1 to V2) dV/V = nRT [ln V] from V1 to V2 = nRT ln(V2/V1)

Converting to base-10 logarithm (common in numerical problems):

W = nRT ln(V2/V1) = 2.303 nRT log10(V2/V1)
