Exceptions: Giffen goods, prestige goods, price expectations, and the quality-price illusion.

The law of demand (price and quantity demanded inversely related) has some exceptions where demand rises with price or behaves abnormally. Four of them:

  1. Giffen goods – these are inferior goods that form a large part of a poor consumer's budget (e.g., coarse grains). When their price rises, the consumer becomes effectively poorer and buys more of the Giffen good (cutting costlier substitutes). So demand rises with price.
  2. Goods of ostentation / prestige (Veblen goods) – luxury items like diamonds and branded goods are bought as status symbols. A higher price increases their prestige value, so more may be demanded at higher prices.
  3. Expectation of a further change in price – if consumers expect prices to rise still further in the future, they buy more now even though the price has already risen (and buy less when prices are expected to fall). …
