Hotspot: The term 'biodiversity hotspot,' coined by Norman Myers, refers to a region that harbours an unusually rich concentration of species, including a large number of endemic species (found nowhere else on Earth), but which is simultaneously experiencing an alarming rate of habitat loss/destruction, placing this biodiversity at risk.
Originally, ten hotspots were identified worldwide; this number has since grown to about 34, together covering a relatively small fraction of the Earth's land area but harbouring a disproportionately large share (nearly 50%) of the world's plant species as endemics. In India, the Western Ghats & Sri Lanka, and the Indo-Burma region (Eastern Himalaya) are recognised as biodiversity hotspots.
