Somatic hybridisation fuses somatic cell protoplasts of two different plants to create a hybrid, bypassing the need for sexual reproduction; alternatively, Spirulina is prized as a cheap, protein-rich single-cell food/feed source.

Somatic hybridisation: In this technique, the cell walls of somatic cells from two different plant species (often sexually incompatible ones) are enzymatically removed to obtain naked protoplasts. Protoplasts from the two species are then induced to fuse (using chemical agents like PEG, or electrofusion), producing a hybrid cell that combines genetic material from both parents. This hybrid cell is cultured to regenerate a whole hybrid plant, allowing genetic combinations impossible through normal sexual crossing. A classic example is the 'Pomato', produced by fusing protoplasts of potato (Solanum tuberosum) and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum).
