- Ethanol to diethyl ether 2 C2H5OH --(excess conc. H2SO4, 413 K)--> C2H5-O-C2H5 + H2O (Intermolecular dehydration: one ethanol is protonated by H2SO4, the second ethanol's oxygen performs an SN2 attack, displacing water and forming the ether linkage. This is Williamson's continuous etherification, industrially used to make diethyl ether.)
- Diethyl ether to ethanol C2H5-O-C2H5 + HI (cold, limited) --> C2H5OH + C2H5I (Ethers are cleaved by strong acids like HI; the more nucleophilic iodide attacks one alkyl carbon, displacing the alcohol as the leaving group, regenerating one molecule of ethanol and forming ethyl iodide. With excess hot HI, the ethanol formed would react further to give a second molecule of C2H5I.)
- Ethanol to ethyl acetate C2H5OH + CH3COOH --(conc. H2SO4, heat)--> CH3COOC2H5 + H2O (Fischer esterification: acid-catalysed condensation of the alcohol with acetic acid, eliminating water to form the ester, ethyl acetate.) OR: Differences between phenol and alcohol
- Acidity: Phenol is markedly more acidic (pKa ~10) than an alcohol (pKa ~16-18) because the phenoxide ion formed on deprotonation is resonance-stabilised by the aromatic ring, delocalising the negative charge; an alkoxide ion has no such stabilisation. …
