A primary amine has one alkyl group on N (RNH2); a secondary amine has two (R2NH). [OR: Amines dissolve in water through hydrogen bonding, but solubility falls as the hydrocarbon part gets bigger.]

Examples

  • Primary amine: CH3NH2 (methanamine/methylamine) — one alkyl group (CH3-) replaces one H of NH3.
  • Secondary amine: (CH3)2NH (dimethylamine) — two alkyl groups replace two H's of NH3.

OR: Why are amines soluble in water?

Lower aliphatic amines (up to about 4-5 carbons) are appreciably soluble, even miscible, with water because:

  1. Primary and secondary amines have N-H bonds that can act as hydrogen-bond donors to the oxygen of water molecules, and the lone pair on N can act as a hydrogen-bond acceptor from water's O-H — so amine molecules hydrogen-bond with water in both directions. …
