Interstitial compounds are formed when small non-metal atoms occupy the empty spaces within a transition metal's crystal lattice; d- and f-block elements find major use as catalysts and in alloy-making.

Two characteristics of interstitial compounds:

  1. They form when small atoms such as H, C, N, or B get trapped in the interstitial (empty) sites of the close-packed crystal lattice of a transition metal, without disrupting the metal's overall lattice structure.
  2. Such compounds are usually very hard, have high melting points (often higher than the pure metal), retain metallic conductivity, and are chemically fairly inert (e.g. tungsten carbide, iron nitride).

OR — Two applications of d- and f-block elements:

  1. Catalysis: Many transition metals and their compounds are used as catalysts in industry — e.g. finely divided iron in the Haber process (NH3 synthesis), nickel in hydrogenation of vegetable oils, V2O5 in the Contact process (H2SO4 manufacture), platinum/palladium in catalytic converters. …
