Polarisation P is the dipole moment per unit volume induced in a dielectric.

When a dielectric (insulating) material is placed in an external electric field, the field displaces the positive and negative charge centres of each molecule, creating induced dipole moments (or aligning already-present permanent dipoles). The net dipole moment developed per unit volume of the material is called the polarisation, denoted P.
