Accounting generates and communicates financial information used by many different stakeholders for decision-making.

Accounting is widely described as a source of (financial) information, and even as the "language of business", because of the following:

  1. Identification and recording: It identifies all financial transactions and events of a business and records them systematically in the books of account (Journal, Ledger, Subsidiary books).
  2. Classification and summarisation: These recorded transactions are classified into relevant accounts and finally summarised into the Trading Account, Profit and Loss Account and Balance Sheet — giving a concise, organised picture of the business's performance (profit/loss) and position (assets, liabilities, capital).
  3. Communication to users: This summarised information is then communicated, through published financial statements, reports and disclosures, to a wide range of internal users (owners, management, employees) and external users (investors, creditors/banks, government/tax authorities, customers, researchers, and the public) — each of whom uses it for a different decision (investment, lending, taxation, wage negotiation, etc.).
