Trade discount is first deducted from the list price to get the invoice value; cash discount (4%) is then calculated on this invoice value, and deducted to arrive at the amount actually paid: Rs. 3,84,000.

Step 1 — Trade Discount:

List Price = Rs. 5,00,000

Trade Discount @ 20% = 5,00,000 × 20% = Rs. 1,00,000

Invoice Price (amount owed) = 5,00,000 − 1,00,000 = Rs. 4,00,000

Step 2 — Cash Discount (available only if paid within 15 days):

Cash Discount @ 4% on Rs. 4,00,000 = 4,00,000 × 4% = Rs. 16,000

Step 3 — Amount to be paid:

= 4,00,000 − 16,000 = Rs. 3,84,000
