Petty Cash balance is cash in hand with the petty cashier, awaiting future small payments — it is a current asset of the business, not an expense, income or liability.

Under the Imprest System, a fixed sum is advanced to the petty cashier, who uses it to meet small day-to-day expenses and periodically gets reimbursed for the amount spent, restoring the balance to the original (imprest) figure. At any point in time, whatever cash remains unspent with the petty cashier is:

  • still the business's own money, merely held by the petty cashier rather than the main cashier,
  • readily available/convertible, exactly like cash in hand.

It is therefore shown in the Balance Sheet under Current Assets, alongside Cash in Hand.
