An Error of Principle arises when the basic distinction between capital and revenue items (or another fundamental accounting principle) is ignored while recording a transaction.

These errors do not affect the agreement of the Trial Balance, because the transaction is still recorded with correct debit and credit amounts — only the wrong account/wrong classification is used. Common examples:
